Do websites need to look exactly the same in every browser?

There is always discussion on our mailing list on just this thing, designers pulling their hair out trying to make their web site for the customer look EXACTLY the same on all platforms and browsers. Now we are not talking about functioning or looking decently close, we are talking about the (anal) compulsion to be perfect.

Do websites need to look exactly the same in every browser?

There is a limit. Especially since the customer probably could care less, just wants the site to work, and won’t want to pay to make it pixel perfect in ALL browsers on ALL platforms. If it looks decent, it works, and validates, the job is done. They can deal with plainness on old browsers, unless they want to pay for hair restoration. And we know that at least from what we’ve seen of the list’s basic client demographic, they ain’t doin that. Let them eat cake they tell us.

BTW, the owner of the site is Dan Cederholm of simplebits. Nuff said. Thanks Dan, for the inspiration from Twitter, for todays blog entry.
